How a Bluetooth device allowed a paralyzed man to walk again
A group of researchers (Lorach et al.) recently published a study showing technology that allowed a paraplegic man to walk again using only his thoughts. It's called a brain-spine interface and has 3 parts: something that reads the brain waves (electrocorticography implant), a computer that decodes the brain signals into useable information, and a spinal implant that stimulates the nerves responsible for walking. What's crazy is that the computer uses Bluetooth to communicate with the spinal implant.
And interesting side note, the spinal implant is a repurposed deep brain stimulator used for patients with Parkinson's disease!

How a CT scan sees inside of you in 3D
Переглядів 20 тис.Рік тому
Computed tomography, or CTs, changed the way medicine is done. Nowadays, this "donut of truth" is used to diagnose diseases, perform image-guided procedures, and even allows us to create 3D models of your insides. So how does it do this? Here we explore reconstruction algorithms in CT in a (hopefully) easy to understand way. Specifically, we break down the science behind filtered backprojection...
What would happen if you didn’t have a patella?
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
This video explores the various machines in our body that provide mechanical advantage - namely, levers, pulleys and gears. The joints in our body act like levers providing either greater power or range of motion. Sesamoid bones like the patella act as pulleys, providing a gliding surface for the patella tendon during knee movements but also changing the direction of the force so that it’s more...
How to deadlift more using biomechanics
Переглядів 2,2 тис.Рік тому
The deadlift is actually more complex than you might think! There are two main styles - leg dominant and hip dominant. It turns out hip dominant deadlifting is actually stronger but this comes at a risk… in this video we’ll discuss how you can use biomechanics to get the most out of your deadlift while staying safe. 👉 Consider subscribing if you found this interesting! 👈 If you liked this video...

The Man Who Used A Party Drug To Save Millions Of Lives
Переглядів 9 тис.2 роки тому
Ether was once used as a party drug in the 1800s but, in 1846, a man by the name of William Morton made a discovery that would change the history of medicine forever. Ether was used as one of the first successful general anesthetics in a surgery performed to remove a tumour from a patient's neck. 👉 Consider subscribing if you found this interesting! 👈
How to efficiently target different muscles when training | Active insufficiency
Переглядів 1,9 тис.2 роки тому
Today we’re learning about the concept of active insufficiency. Sometimes muscles cross multiple joints and so different body positions will target different muscles or muscle heads. For example, do you know the difference between standing or seated calf raises? Or the difference between preacher and seated incline curls in training the different heads of the biceps? 👉 Consider subscribing if y...
How muscles have gears like cars
Переглядів 5 тис.2 роки тому
Muscles have gears which allow them to move fast with less power when carrying something light and slowly but with more power when carrying something heavy. This is similar to how a car in high gear can travel at greater top speeds but will accelerate slower from standstill, whereas a car in a low gear will accelerate much faster from a standstill but not be able to reach very high speeds. The ...

The kinetic chain in football (soccer)
Переглядів 11 тис.2 роки тому
Let's talk about the kinetic chain. The kinetic chain is a super important concept in biomechanics and is used in many different sports like football (soccer), tennis, golf, basketball, cricket and baseball. It describes how body parts extend out sequentially one after another like how your arm unravels when throwing a ball or how your legs straightens out when kicking a football. The beauty of...
